CHAPTER 14

Angel kissed the top of Nora’s head, realizing he’d never done this before: lying entwined in bed after sex, kissing the top of a girl’s head like she meant the world to him.

Nora had a way of opening up a whole new side to him.

“I’m glad you’re here,” she whispered in the dark.

It could have been seconds, minutes or even hours since their third round in the middle of the night. He couldn’t get enough of her and going by Nora’s enthusiasm she’d been all for it, too.

“Yeah,” he said.

“Yeah? As in: me too?”

He could hear the smile in her voice, and retaliated by tickling her sides.

“Stop!” she exclaimed, bursting into laughter.

“That’s what you get for being Miss Smarty Pants.”

She wriggled and turned around before tickling him back while facing him.

Suddenly, a thin stream of light seeped into the room from beneath her bedroom door, and they instantly stopped tickling while staring at each other. Lying perfectly still, he only heard Nora’s breathing and the heavy footsteps approaching from the hallway.

It sounded like Fox left the apartment in the middle of the night. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out where he’d been hanging out.

Angel gave Nora a soft kiss, needing to break their intense stare in the semi-dark.

“Maybe you should go with Fox,” she whispered.

He furrowed his brows. “Why?”

“You’re leaving anyway, at least now you can ride together.”

Angel kissed the top of her head while tugging her closer. “Nah, I’m a lone rider.”

"I know you are, but you're great at acting social."

He tried to decipher her meaning by reading her stormy eyes. “Oh, yeah?”

“I’ve seen you party with your brothers during lockdown.”

He didn’t like the road she was heading. The last thing he wanted to talk about while snuggling up to Nora were the club whores.

She continued, “And you’re nice to the prospects while the others treat them horrible.”

He tried to joke his way out of this conversation topic, and said, “What can I say? I’m a nice guy.”

“But there’s still a bit of distance between you and the others. I can’t put my finger on it.”

He should have known that Quiet One would be a great observer since she always stood on the sidelines watching others. She reminded him of Ranger, one of the three brothers that transferred from IVMC Seattle. His sniper focus never wavered since returning from his last tour in Afghanistan.

“Distance?”

She watched him closely again and said, “I wonder if any of them know the real you.”

"Nobody knows me through and through." The words slipped out before he could rethink them.

“I would like to know you better, Thomas.”

Nora wasn’t the first girl trying to connect with him, but her using his government name reminded him how he’d already opened up to her.

“You get three questions,” he said with a smile, but he’d meant it. Letting her get close was one thing, sharing his deepest secrets wasn’t part of his plan.

“Wow, three whole questions? How generous.”

He laughed despite himself. “I know.”

She tapped her chin with her index finger.
